Youth unemployment – everyone’s responsibility
Youth unemployment affects us all – from educators and employers to policymakers and young people themselves.
It’s estimated to have cost the UK economy £31 billion between 2021 and 2025.1
And nearly three in five (57%) people believe the government should be doing more to help young people get into work.2

Stronger together
Whether you’re a small business owner, work for a large employer, or represent the public sector, you’ll leave inspired – and with tangible ways to get involved.
Together, let’s create bright futures for young people across Enfield.
As young people get older, they are more likely to feel ‘not very confident’ or ‘not confident at all’ that they’ll be able to progress into a good job.

The Campaign
Why this campaign matters
Almost 1 in 7 young people in the UK are not in education, employment or training (NEET).1
We believe that must change – starting here in Enfield.
Every young person deserves a clear path into the world of work. But too many face real and rising barriers.
Being NEET as a young person increases the risk of lower wages and future unemployment. 2
The cost to the UK economy is estimated to be £31 billion between 2021 and 2025. 3
Together, we can change this.
“If a young disabled person can get a supported internship, an accessible apprenticeship, or simply good careers advice and work experience, they are much more likely to obtain fulfilling careers.”
House of Lords Public Services Committee, 20247
#EnfieldWorks is a borough-wide campaign to create thousands of work opportunities between now and 2030.
We’re building a movement – and we need partners like you.
Ways to get involved
- Give careers talks and attend school events
- Host learners for workplace visits or taster days
- Offer work experience of job-shadowing
- Promote your early careers pathways locally
- Offer supported internships or apprenticeships
- Help shape vocational courses and qualifications
Whether you’re a small business, a large employer, or a public sector leader – your support matters.
Join us at the launch event on 12 June to find out more.
Together, we can unlock potential and create bright futures for Enfield’s young people.
What young people are saying2
- Only 10% feel confident there are good jobs in their local area.
- Nearly half (47%) say lack of work experience holds them back.
- Anxiety (43%) and a shortage of local jobs (26%) are top concerns.
- Just 1 in 3 believe employers are supportive of hiring young people.
Some young people face even greater challenges
- Young people with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) are almost twice as likely to be NEET.4
- Young people in PRUs (pupil referral units) have some of the lowest progression rates in the country – just 9% continue into education, employment or training after school. 5
- Young disabled people face a 22-point employment gap versus their non-disabled peers. 6
- Young people leaving care are 3.5 times more likely to be NEET than their peers. 7

About ECT
Who we are
The Enterprise Cooperative Trust (ECT) is a not-for-profit cooperative founded in June 2022.
Our membership spans schools, charities, community interest groups, businesses and local government – united by a shared mission:
Creating life-changing opportunities for Enfield’s young people.
Together, we’re working to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the borough – from inequality to youth unemployment.
Our strategic goals
We’re focused on four strategic objectives that will help make a measurable difference:
- Develop meaningful work experience, volunteering, and job opportunities for young people
- Generate new income streams to support innovation and sustainability
- Conduct research that drives better employment outcomes
- Create an industry-backed, vocational curriculum across member schools
How we work
We bring our mission to life through collaboration – and we’re proud to work with a growing network of:
Employer partners: Organisations that sponsor, fundraise, donate, or create opportunities directly with us.
Ambassadors: Individuals with partner organisations who help deliver and advocate for our work.
Influencers: Council members, journalists, policymakers and other changemakers who amplify our message.
Our approach
Rooted in cooperative values, our work is structured around four interconnected portfolios.
“Only 36% of young people said they had the option for work experience during their time in secondary school, which was mostly organised with the help of parents and other family members”
